There are levels of astrological awareness and often these are defined by the planets and signs expressions which can be numerous and according to the astrologers interpretation, however to make it easier when it comes to working out how to find out more information about a planet and how to interpret and synthesize its personality/soul/spiritual identity so that those expressions are whole, and connected, and unified, basically there’s two main parts to it and this applies to any level of astrology—those parts are familiarity with the planet itself and the dispositor of a sign which in the case of a sign or its natural ruling planets personality, and soul, and spiritual identity there are three to consider for its wholistic expression.
*note: See table of “Planetary Correspondences” below for each signs threefold natural planetary rulership.
Part 1: The Planet Itself
First interpretation involves in part a combination of intuition and knowing a planets characteristics and then synthesizing using keywords that suit—knowing the foundation principles of a sign can help in that process. Once that’s done you will have established a planets basic general characteristics—however for greater understanding and realisation of forces at work that make up consciousness and life itself, via a planet, and to further develop and harness its currents of electromagnetism, and subtle frequencies of its makeup in relation to the physical, and emotional, and mental, and spiritual planes of consciousness, entails that a planet in order for a more wholistic expression and outlet for its forces in this day and age its personality, and soul, and spiritual nature needs defining.
Using specific keywords or keyword phrases to interpret
Astrology teaches the astrologer to become aware of the subtle electromagnetic properties within them and without according to the planets natures or definition in relation to how they as an individual identify with what each one is and that’s mostly at the outset by what they have learnt about them in their studies, and from sources as they go along, and then from that interpretation of the planets identity slowly gets built up and recognised within their self and others—the more they are able to identify with a planet on each plane of consciousness the more the archetypal nature of the planet grows and is revealed. This can cause subtle shifts in consciousness each time and in order to detect the more subtle nature of a planet and find a way in at the beginning to its archetypal pattern or DNA blueprint if you like of its personality/soul/ spiritual characteristics, a simple method is to use the keyword of the planet—and then link it to the keyword denoted by each of the houses and signs corresponding with its personality, and soul, and spiritual rulership.
Using the moon here’s an example of the rulerships in astrological shorthand and how its makeup or identity can be interpreted.
Moon= Nurture, apply that then in relation to: foundation/4th hse matters, + service/6th hse matters, + socialise/philanthropy/11th hse matters. All the way through you use “nurture” however nurture or in other words the moon, reveals its more subtle or sensitive qualities when “nurture” is employed in a manner and with things to do with “Virgo and sixth house and service” in terms of soul consciousness expression awareness—and for spiritual consciousness awareness and expression of things—nurture becomes a form of spiritual support and guidance etc coming from “11th house matters, and Aquarius, and social and philanthropic” things. These are its three natural rulerships of personality, soul and spiritual expression.
Using the above example then and applying it to the chart we’d look to where the moon is and 1st off note the house it’s in and sign—however before going any further for a moment we might look at the symbol and intuit its meaning and see it as being made up naturally of connections to the 4th, and 6th, and 11th house things and the signs of Cancer, and Virgo, and Aquarius wherever they are placed in the chart.
So for a wholistic expression outlet of the moon’s position, would be as a result of a nurture and personality expression coming from and going to things of the 4th and wherever Cancer is placed—and for soul expression identity, things coming from and going to as a result of good awareness and utilisation of soul values such as love and soul purpose for example where Virgo is placed and sixth house things—and for spiritual identity and expression of values, and guidance, and direction etc to do with nurture, you’d look to where Aquarius is placed and your 11th house things.
Also you may have noticed it’s a two way street for a planet. It draws from other areas of a chart and gives out or expresses not only through the house its posited in but also to other areas of the chart connected with its natural rulership and by aspect to other planets.
So in our example the moon wherever it is in the chart supplies “nurture” (ie keyword) to those signs and houses it has a natural affinity with in terms of its particular identity. The basic levels of a chart can be read singularly as either just a personality, or soul, or spiritual chart, or with a bit more practice what I like to call as a “wholistic chart” expression being the ensemble of the three.
A visual exercise to help with becoming more aware of a planet’s levels is to draw up a natural order chart of the signs and their houses and put the planet in the house of its personality, and soul, and spiritual rulerships and then join them together with a line marked so that the three are connected.
With the keyword of the planet in mind next go to your natal chart and note its position by the house and sign it’s in and extend that to include its link with its natural ruling houses and signs to get a better idea of its makeup as explained in the example above on the moon.
That visual can really help bring on the intuition and when applied to your natal or progressed chart give further insight to the planets position and where its connections are coming from that links the lot together which makes for a more wholistic and powerful attunement and expression then of the planet in its position in the chart.
So now we have the foundation principles of a planet being its natural ruling signs and houses for its personality/soul/spiritual expressions established as part of its DNA makeup that will help to further reveal what its nature and purpose is in the particular house it’s in the chart and through the sign on the cusp of that house.
Part 2: The Dispositors of a Sign
The 2nd part for how to interpret a planet is to note its relationship in terms of the sign it’s in and that sign’s three natural ruling planets (ie its dispositors) where they are posited in the chart for further guidance and understanding of those connecting influences denoting expressions of consciousness, as they are also electromagnetic currents of import that flow into the planet’s nature and add to its personality, and soul, and spiritual expression.
For example if you have Jupiter in the 9th house in Aquarius then you would break it down by noting 1st using keywords) what Jupiter in Aquarius in 9th house matters are about—then for more information about Jupiter and those 9th house matters look to where the dispositors of Aquarius are which are its three natural ruling planets being Uranus/Jupiter/Moon expressions and note what things coming from those houses to do with those planets that relate to Jupiter and its position in the ninth.
So for example in this case you’d note what house Uranus is in—and then Jupiter as it is the natural soul ruler of Aquarius and happens to be in that sign, which makes it incidentally a stronger influence to be aware of in relation to consciousness of soul awareness, and guidance, and expression—and then the Moon’s position which denotes where information comes from in regards to spiritual guidance, and development, and support, in the form of things that nurture for example to do with the house the moon is in and that relate or connect to Jupitarian things and 9th house matters that you want to find out more about.
How we might write this interpretation in astrological shorthand might go something like this for example:
1) Uranus foundation :
- Keyword—Humanitarian or you could use Socialise or Philanthropic
- Its natural makeup: Personality/Soul/Spiritual=11th—7th—1st for the house influences and Aquarius—Libra—Aries for the sign influences, then we would note:
2) Its house position in natal chart=5th, progressed=2nd, solar return=8th, and then
3) Note the sign it’s in three natural ruling planets—for the type of influences, and guidance, and support, and information, they provide to get a clearer picture and more sounder interpretation that describes and reveals more in relation to its position.
Using those two standard astrological methods is quiet common in learning a couple of good astrology interpretation techniques used by astrologers for a sign and planet which can also be applied just as well when it comes to interpreting a signs personality, and soul and spiritual combination in the chart.
